Moving with confidence – balance and safely navigating obstacles

The "Confident in Motion" course—focusing on balance and safely navigating obstacles—offers a unique and enjoyable form of physical activity for seniors aged 65 and older. It draws on the fundamental principles of parkour, adapting them to the specific needs and physical capabilities of this age group. It demonstrates that parkour need not be solely a dynamic sport for the young; it can also be an effective tool for enhancing physical abilities in later life.

The program aims to improve balance, stability, coordination, strength, and overall confidence in movement. Through practical exercises and scenarios involving natural movement, participants learn to better control their bodies, safely navigate common obstacles, and respond to unexpected situations encountered in daily life.

The practical component integrates basic parkour elements with exercises for balance, coordination, and strength. Participants will practice activities such as stepping over and clearing obstacles, shifting weight, changing direction, moving across uneven surfaces, and transitioning between different body positions. These activities are based on real-life situations and focus on developing agility, spatial awareness, and the ability to adapt movement to changing conditions.
A key component of the course will be fall prevention and practicing safe movement reactions. Participants will learn techniques to help them respond effectively if they lose their balance or trip. They will practice skills such as controlled descents to the ground, basic rolling techniques, and safe position changes. Training will progress gradually, utilizing soft mats and other appropriate equipment.

The goal of the course is not athletic performance or overcoming difficult obstacles, but rather enhancing physical independence, self-confidence, and the ability to safely navigate everyday movement situations. The program also fosters a positive attitude toward physical activity and demonstrates that new movement skills can be developed at any age.

All exercises will be tailored to the participants' current physical condition and individual capabilities. Emphasis will be placed on safety, correct movement execution, and a supportive environment where everyone can explore new movement challenges at their own pace.

The course will be led by Jaroslav Chum, a successful Czech national parkour athlete, who will introduce parkour both as a sport and as a philosophy of natural, functional movement.
